The Murder of Catherine Wrenn

On 12 December 2002, 85-year-old Catherine Wrenn was attacked outside her home in Clapton Square, Hackney.

She died in Homerton Hospital three days later.

Catherine had worked as a midwife before her retirement, delivering over 5,000 babies, and had lived in the area for more than 50 years. Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Shatford of the Serious Crime Group said:

"Catherine Wrenn was a defenceless elderly lady who had never harmed anyone in her life. Her other pleasure was to attend the local church."
Neighbours found Catherine slumped on her doorstep and bleeding profusely. She had been grabbed from behind and knocked to the ground. She managed to tell her neighbours that she had been robbed.

A black youth was seen running from the scene. Those who saw him said he was grinning.

He has never been found.
