Jolene had foolishly involved herself in the drugs scene and she had asked local drugs runners for money on the evening she died. This request had angered the runners’ boss, 22-year-old drugs Baron, Kieron aka 'Preston' Simei.
In his opening address to the court, the prosecutor said:
"Jolene opens the main door to the flats. Two figures in the doorway appear close together. There is no time at all for any meaningful conversation. Kieron Simei swiftly stabs her. You can see that from her movement backwards in CCTV footage… She bends forwards clutching herself. She staggers back, turns and runs, making for her flat where, some time afterwards, she dies from the wound."In his first police interview, Simei denied knowledge of Jolene’s murder and claimed he didn't know her. However, when presented with incontrovertible evidence of his guilt, he confessed, saying:
"I stabbed her. It was accidental… just charge me. You've got your man… I didn't think it would kill her. I just thought it would hurt her."Simei had 'accidentally' thrust a large carving knife into Jolene’s abdomen 'to a depth of six or seven inches,' such that the blade actually went all the way through her body and struck her spine.
And Simei was so dense he didn’t think such a blow would kill her?
The jury didn’t think much of the Simei’s excuses either, they found him guilty of murder and he was jailed for life.
Three years before he killed Jolene, Simei had pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply and two charges of assaulting a police officer. At the time of sentencing, his barrister had pleaded for leniency, citing a 'chequered childhood' and his father’s early death, adding:
"Since his arrest… he has stayed clear of drugs and wants a chance to change his behaviour and become a father to his young child, who currently lives with his ex-girlfriend."Judge Patrick Hooton obviously took this to heart because he sentenced the future killer to just 18 months. He was out in plenty of time to murder the pretty girl pictured below.
